The carbonation of concrete is discussed in relation to the corrosion of the reinforcements. Depending on the depth of carbonation, time to corrode, or whether the corrosion has been started can be decided. This test is called the carbonation test.
On the other hand, the carbonation of concrete provides beneficial effects such as an increase in the compressive strength and the tensile strength of the concrete.
The following factors are mainly affecting the carbonation.
- Relative humidity
- Temperature
- Concentration of CO2
There are different methods to evaluate the level of carbonation and the following can be highlighted out of those.
- IR spectrum analysis
- pH indicator analysis
There is more to be discussed on the carbonation. For further reading on carbonation and its testing methods, etc. could be studied form the latter part of the article “Nondestructive testing of Concrete“.
