Design strength for BS 8110

The design strength of material for different cases is tabulated in the BS 8110 Part 01 Table 2.2. Refer to the following table for more information.

This table can be used when we use the equations given in the code. Some of the values are embedded in the equations and we do not need to add them again. For example, when we design a concrete section with the equations given in the code, material safety factor for concrete should be considered at it has already considered when deriving the equations.

For concrete subjected to flexure or axial loads, a factor of 1.5 has considered and it can not be seen in the equations. However, the material safety factors for reinforced steel can be seen most of the time in different forms. For example, when we design for bending, in BS 8110 Part 01 1997, we can see a factor of 0.95 which is (1/1.05).
