Structural Guide

Structural loads, structural analysis and structural design are simply explained with the worked example for easiness of understanding. Element designs with notes and discussions have added to get comprehensive knowledge. Also, construction materials, shoring system design, water retaining structures, crack width calculations, etc. have discussed in addition to other aspects.

Maximum area of reinforcemnt

The maximum area of reinforcement can be found under the clause 3.12.6. It states the reinforcement ratios for columns, walls, and beams. These ratios should be used with the detailing rules that govern the spacing and lapping of reinforcements.

Beams
The maximum allowed area of reinforcement is 4% for each tension and compression of its cross-sectional area.

Columns
Depending on the casting method and the lapping of reinforcements, it can be seen different reinforcement ratios (for longitudinal direction) in BS 8110 Part 01 1997.

  1. Vertically cast columns – 6%
  2. Horizontally cast columns – 8%
  3. At laps in above both types of columns – 10%

Walls

The area of vertical reinforcement should not be greater than 4% of its cross sectional area.
